“The Airwave proposal was also
the only one that had enough
foresight to interrogate our brief
even further and present us with
primary and secondary locations
for disaster recovery for business
continuity.” The three-year contract
was signed at the end of 2012.
The AELTC offers year-round use
for some 100 radio users. During The
Championships, an additional 800
radios are provided for contractors
and third party service providers.
Working with partner Servicom,
Airwave delivered a fully managed
service, which comprises a
primary site carrying voice and
data communications above and
below ground, using an RF-over-
bre special solution to provide
full coverage of The AELTC and
surrounding areas. A secondary site
was installed for resilience, ensuring
a full back-up service could be up
and running in 90 seconds.

Delivery Manager for The All
England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC)
Wimbledon 2013 was the system’s
major debut, and it passed with
“ying colours, carrying half a million
calls during The Championships
with no loss of service due to an
infrastructure incident.
Comprehensive user training was
critical to ensure the system was
used to its full potential, Andreas said:
“Our training was spot on and it was
Airwave who highlighted the need
for enhanced training in advance.
Airwave was very helpful in assisting
us put together a plan for training that
included business continuity aspects.
“We were also advised that the
biggest challenge was going to
be getting our “eet mapping right.
We thought we understood the
concept, but it was only when we
started to design it that we realised
how much of a complex activity
it was. The moment we started
offering people the opportunity
to speak to other groups it then
became even more complex. A
lesson learned, that we will bring
in to The Championships 2014,
is to keep better hold of the “eet
map and not let it expand so much.
“During The Championships, we
never hit capacity on the network,
but we would have had we not
worked so closely with Airwave in
the run up to the event. The radios
are really important to us, and a lot of
pre-planning went into ensuring the
communications were as successful as
The Championships themselves.”
Half a million calls were carried
over the Airwave Service during
Wimbledon 2013.
