Reach
Issue 6 2014
W
elcome to the rst 2014 edition of Reach. It’s certainly been an eventful few
months in terms of the weather across the country, as our front cover picture
shows. Our feature article on the weather, page 10-11, shows just how critical
effective communications are in situations where every second counts. The Airwave
Network covers over 99% of Great Britain’s landmass, including very remote areas, and is
proven to work when other networks fail. It provides a vital lifeline, and proved its worth
during the storms when communities were left without power and phone coverage. Indeed
Airwave itself was affected by the power cuts with 75 of our base stations losing power,
but all remained operational thanks to our unique back up system.
Although the storms were accurately tracked and reported by the meteorologists, our rst
responder customers must be ready to tackle emergency situations that happen without notice.
The piece on page 18-19 detailing how the emergency services plan for and practice their response
procedures illustrates just how much we rely on the emergency responders professionals. The co-
operation of the different agencies is essential, as is their ability to communicate immediately with all
agencies involved in the incident. Because all emergency services use the Airwave Service, they can
co-ordinate their responses to serious incidents – in fact our research shows that every week around
13% of all calls on the Airwave Network involve the response of more than one agency.
We also give you the unique view of Airwave employee Dom Robertson. As well as being a
valued member of staff for us, Dom is also a paramedic – so sees critical communications from
both the provider and the user viewpoint. Read his story on page 23.
This year brings exciting new developments, particularly in the area of mobile data. Airwave’s
4GMax solution is already in use by Surrey Police – nd out how it works, and the huge potential
that it offers, on page 24-26.
