elcome to the first edition of Reach for 2015 – the eighth edition of the
magazine. The events that destabilised the world in the first few weeks of this
year – the attacks in Paris, the loss of the AirAsia plane, and the ongoing battle
against the Ebola virus – all serve to highlight the tremendous work being carried out by
the emergency services and first responders around the world – they are the foundation
on which our safety and security is built, and we are indebted.
Our feature article (pages 12-16) for this edition is about Heathrow Airport, and how its teams
work together to ensure the highest levels of safety and security – this really is a textbook
example of embedding best practice. The nationwide upgrade of the Ministry of Defence (MOD)
Barrack Security Radio system (pages 8-9) across Great Britain has been completed. The
new system provides secure, reliable and responsive communications by taking advantage of
Airwave’s Emergency Services Network (ESN) and service support capability.
We have two distinguished writers in this edition – Hayden Newton, former Chief Executive
Officer of the East of England Ambulance Service (EEAST), and Sheridan Nye from Frost
and Sullivan. Both have illuminating views on critical communications, from different
perspectives – find out what they think on pages 2-6 and 20-22. We also take a look at
Aik Saath, a Slough-based charity comprising a notable group of young people dedicated
to supporting young peacemakers – see page 7.
2014 was a particularly busy year for Airwave, with the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth
Games, the NATO 2014 Summit in Wales and the Invictus Games at London’s Queen Elizabeth
Olympic Park. You can read about the NATO Summit in more detail on pages 26-27.
We also opened a new office in Dubai in response to increasing demand for our experience and
knowledge in building, maintaining and operating Airwave’s ESN in Great Britain. The office will serve
as a hub to advise Middle Eastern customers on critical communications, and is profiled on page 23.
As always, we welcome your comments, and ideas you have for stories in future editions of
Reach – please do email me at
