Nationwide upgrade of
MOD Barrack Security
Radio system completed
ahead of schedule
A
programme to deliver new
secure radio equipment
to 160 Ministry of Defence
(MOD) barracks across Great
Britain – from Inverness in
northern Scotland to Lulworth on
the south coast of England and
Brawdy on the west coast of Wales
– has been completed in just six
months, ahead of schedule.
Under a national programme
launched to replace the disparate
mixture of analogue, digital and
often obsolete radio infrastructure
and handsets, the MOD approached
Airwave to develop a Barrack
Security Radio (BSR) system that
would provide secure, reliable
and responsive communications
by taking advantage of Airwave’s
Emergency Services Network (ESN)
and service support capability.
Drawing on his previous
experience as a Royal Corps of
Signals officer, Airwave’s Service
Relationship Manager Richard Dilnot
was instrumental in developing the
system, from an initial trial to full
project delivery.
“The efficiency, speed and quality
of the roll-out demonstrated how
closely we work with our customers
to deliver a project,” said Richard.
By using Airwave Direct – a fully-
managed service for customers
who need access to Airwave’s
ESN – BSR has been delivered
cost-effectively and to the extremely
tight delivery timescales stipulated
by the MOD’s challenging
operational requirements.
Airwave’s ESN is secure, covers
99% of Great Britain’s landmass and
provides seamless interoperability
for planned and unplanned events,
meaning different agencies are
able to communicate on the same
system should the need arise.
