The right qualities

With a growing number of customers choosing Airwave’s suite of applications (apps), Pronto, it’s important to understand the rigorous quality and testing checks that we have in place to make sure our apps are ready for our very important customers.

Airwave’s quality manager, Neil Stewart, discusses this crucial final stage of application development, testing, and takes us through the importance of getting it right.

“The primary function of my team is to make sure the whole of the app works. Not just on a functional requirements level, but also in terms of usability. I think we go further with our quality checks by considering every element of the application. It’s not just about whether the client software is working properly, or whether it seamlessly allows access to secure back-office systems and national databases such as the PNC, it’s also about testing whether it is easy to use. Airwave’s quality assurance team considers how the app functions in the hands of the end user, not just in the comfort of the test lab. Usability is key; the app needs to work in the live environment, whether it is being used in varying light conditions, with gloved hands, on the move, or in circumstances where the user has to keep a cautious eye on who they are interacting with!

When you work with the public safety market, there is a degree of trust from the customer - trust that we will understand their ways of working and processes, and trust that we will produce something that can securely interact with back end systems.

When you’re developing apps for the public safety market, such as for the police, it is crucial that the product is extensively tested to the point that services are fully functional and robust. Any issues that are identified in live systems can be time consuming to remedy, time that the emergency services don’t have to spare. Thankfully, as Pronto utilises over the air provisioning, so we can deliver fixes straight to the end users devices. This is comforting to know, but ultimately it is better to apply preventive actions rather than corrective ones.

Pronto can be used as a standalone system or as a central data hub for many third party systems, such as Niche. The complete integration with these systems is all part of the solution that we offer the customer. In order to sign off such integrated solutions, we need to call upon our expert knowledge of both Pronto and of the third party systems. This requires close working relationships with the customer and the other system providers to make sure all integrations are tested thoroughly prior to launch.

When you work with the public safety market, there is a degree of trust from the customer - trust that we will understand their ways of working and processes, and trust that we will produce something that can securely interact with back end systems. Not only does the application need to be secure and the content encrypted, we need to guarantee the security clearance of our staff.

We work closely with our customers through consultations, where we give them an opportunity to look at their processes and think about how they could be doing things digitally. This helps them in their journey to eliminate errors and reduce bureaucracy. As we have moved forward with our customers, we’ve seen them thinking in increasingly efficient ways to consider how their processes can be improved, working with us to make the Pronto suite work for them in the right ways.”
